Youth Season Update

Hello again all my technologically advanced and well connected waterfowl enthusiast friends. Welcome again to Muck Bottom Outfitters Waterfowl Report.
Our Youth Waterfowl season has concluded and the boys shot 5 ducks and 2 coots. Yep, that's right, it's coot season in the Ditch. Suprisingly 2 of the 5 real ducks were gadwall. There are some pic's at the bottom of the page titled youth season 09. Saturday AM the boys unloaded 3 times and only managed to scrath 1 duck. Today was a different story. They shot 4 ducks (2 teal and 2 gadwall) and the 2 great tasting - fast flying - weed eating coots. Man them baby's taste good wrapped in bacon. Just a few more weeks left until it's time. Is everybody ready? We have some more new invaders into the bottoms and we've yet to see, or talk to anyone from the new ditch. They had backhoe's and box scrapers working this past week trying to get their pit's burried before the season starts. We are glad they are hunting this season, 'cause what we saw sitting there this spring was not a good site for those of us around. Last thing we need is new wetlands unhunted. Who would want that? No one wants the birds to stay around, or have a safe haven. Let's hunt every acre and keep 'em moving around.

That's all for now, check back for the latest and greatest and thanks for all the hits. Send us your report.

Remember When...

We've been catching some heat about not posting the last week or so. Well, there ain't nothin' to write about in the world of duck hunting. We haven't received any teal or early goose reports so there is nothing but a lot of waiting going on right now. Which leads me to the discussion of the day. Remember when...
...you could watch the weather and know you we're going to shoot birds
...canvas waders were the bomb
...neoprene was something only scuba divers had
...your coffee got cold
...a wooden duck call sounded great
...everyone blew a big river goose call
...the robo duck first came out and you actually got up the nerve to use it
...you realized that the rabbit fur hat was a good idea
...you made up stories as to why you weren't able to go to work, oh wait we still do that
...desoto bend actually held birds
...heaters were for sissy's
...you had to carry a plastic bag so the Polaroids wouldn't get wet
...3 and 1/2 inches was a metophor
..."the day" was

Ah...there it is! THE DAY. The one moment in our waterfowling lives that we will remember forever. THE DAY when it all came together. We all have at least one, and perhaps even 3 or 4, but THE DAY is what keeps us coming back. The 100+ bird day, the snow blowin' blizzard 4 man brave sole canada goose limit day, the why did we leave so early day, the send someone to the store for more bullets day, the iced in blind ain't no birds flyin' why am I here day. No matter what your recollection of THE DAY is, it's the one thing your nagging wife can't take away. I'm sorry did I say that out loud? That's all for now, check back for the latest and greatest and thanks for all the hits. Youth season and live Ditch footage only a few days away. Send us your report.

First Official E-Mail Report

Hello again all my technologically advanced and well connected waterfowl enthusiast friends. Welcome to Muck Bottom Outfitters Waterfowl Report. We have officially recieved our first emailed report and pictures to go along with it. Welcome to the report Leshara Ditch. Our new friends hunt by Leshara about 1 mile off the Platte River. I've had a chance to hunt that-a-way a few times and let me tell you, when the ducks are here there is almost no better place to be! Our friend from the new Ditch sent along the follwing reports all wrapped up in one good email with plenty of pic's.

Sept 13 - Had the pleasure of Sure Shot, Sr. today with me and the guys. Not much around, but we did unload on a group of 40 teal after the fog cleared and dropped 11.

Sept 12 - Overcast skies and temp around 60 lots of teal and large ducks around. We had our 2-man limits in 20 minutes. If we would've had more guns, we could have shot 6 limits. The teal kept buzzing 'til around 9AM.

Sept 5 - 50 Degrees and foggy didn't see any teal but did see some puddle ducks and wood ducks. Saw one group of local geese flipping around but to far to call at.
Sept 6 - Foggy day 50 degrees . We dusted 2 teal right away and the fog was almost unbarable. Right as it began to clear away we had 20 more come screamin' in and took 5, should have shot more.

Labor Day - Foggy and 50's another limit of teal.

It seems that our new friends can shoot a bit. There were 4 guys there today and they dropped 11 out of one bunch. That's some good shootin', but why wouldn't it be, Sure Shot SR was there! He taught me everything I know. You can see all the pic's from Leshara Ditch, as well as all other reports pic's, at the bottom of the blog under 2009 Sites. Thanks for the reports and keep 'em coming. That's all for now, check back for the latest and greatest and thanks for all the hits. Send us your reports.

A.D.H.D.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is primarily charterized by the coexistence of attentional problems and hyperactivity, with each behavior occuring infrequently alone. While symptoms may appear to be innocent and merely annoying nuisances to observers, if left untreated, the persistent and pervasive affects of ADHD symptoms can insidiously and severely interfere with one's ability to get most out of education, fulfill one's potential in the workplace, establish and maintain interpersonal relationships, and maintain a generally positive sense of self. ADHD is charaterized by stubbornness, aggression, temper, lying, anxiety, obsession and mood swings...where am I going with this?

ADHD means Another Day Hunting Doves. Ah hah, that's were I was going. Although the symptoms of ADHD are similar to the actions and behaviors of a waterfowler, that isn't where I meant to go.

Hello again all my technologically advanced and well connected waterfowl enthusiast friends. Welcome to Muck Bottom Outfitters Waterfowl Report. Another late afternoon to dusk Dove shoot yielded a 45 dove, 3 man limit. Today we realized we've been missing one important piece of equipment needed to safely get home after a dove shoot. A TOW ROPE. The water-run-off proved to be a bit deep today and the Tahoe went nose first in...and stopped. After a long hot afternoon of hunting, it's just what the doctor ordered, a stuck truck. Had to run into town and get a chain. Suprisingly enough, a dodge dakota pulled it out. Guess nothing beats a Dodge. Today there was a youngster in the mix and he managed to fire off 5 boxes at those pesky little doves. If you've never seen a young man in Junior High fire off 100 rounds in 4 hours, you just haven't lived. Take a youngster hunting!!! You'll be happier than the day your first dog brought back his first duck! With the real migratory bird season 'round the corner, the dove shoots are pretty much over. What little time that is left needs to be spent on stringin' deeks, settin' deeks, settin' more deeks, settin' more deeks, and gathering all that gear around that you have no idea where you put it at the end of the season last year. We're goin' to be full throttle from now until the last weekend in September (youth season). We will be 100 percent ready on the first day of the Youth Weekend. That's all for now, as always, check back for the latest and greatest, and thanks for all the hits. Send us your report.

I grabbed the dog and a dummy and headed outside to the empty lot. It appears that, other than the low-light dusk conditions, it works. Should have some great footage this fall. Can't Wait!

Enchanted Evening with the Dove Commander

Hello again all my technologically advanced and well connected waterfowl enthusiast friends. Welcome to Muck Bottom Outfitters Waterfowler Report.

We've all seen the "duck commander" in magazines, on the web and perhaps even on the plastic cases our calls have been wrapped in. But have you seen the Dove Commander? Don't worry, I was skeptical myself. I'm here to tell you he exists. He comes out a couple times in early September and slides away until the next year. He visits the marsh land and looks for just the right spot.

In late afternoon we set off on a long trek into the unknown, following the commander, heading toward what appeared to be the "X". The "X" for what we don't know, I'm recalling in my mind scenes from Children of the Corn as we head deeper and deeper into the brush. Are we in search of white doves? Perhaps signaling our demise and meeting with Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates. Just what have we gotten ourselves in to? A slight hand motion signals the stopping point. I've now switched from Children of the Corn to a member of SWAT being motioned to stop and sit down. Finally, it is here that we see among the mud, marijuana, button weeds and sunflowers he is home. He pounds steel posts into the ground with precision and purpose, tightly winding #9 wire between them and cliping on four dove decoys. Yes, I said decoys. He then, carefully and strategically, sets up the robo-doves. Yes, again, I made reference to decoys. It's time, he motions to the crew of 4 and we sit down as if in a trance gazing at the sky. Not long and it starts. Doves flying, doves dropping, shells ejecting, barrels smoking, mosquitos the size of barn swallows biting, and empty shell boxes piling up. After 3 1/2 hours of sore shoulders and sore necks, it's over. The commander starts to pick up the dead and silently walk away, leaving only the stench of blood and gun powder behind. We take his lead and slowly follow the legend of the marsh back to the truck, it was then when we realized the level of our success. With 5 guns and non- stop shooting, we managed to count exactly 5 limits. The commander, among the blasts and carnage, knew exactly when it was time to go.

After a bit of a worrisome start we had a great evening. Ducks and Geese are just around the corner. That's all for now. As always, check back for the latest and greatest and thanks for all the hits. Send us your report.

Good Fortune for a few Youngsters

Hello again all my technologically advanced and well connected waterfowl enthusiast friends. Welcome to Muck Bottom Outfitters Waterfowl report.

The first official report of the season is here and it comes from some new friends whose ditch was the site of Canada Down. 10 big one's in the bag. They managed to shuffle over a few pics for all of us to see. Great job boys, story has it that the "guide", pictured here without a bird, didn't even shoot, the boys took care of all 10 by themselves.

Some other news comes from the Hay Ditch, 10 down there too, seems to be a popular number this weekend. The fog played havoc with their well timed out and thought out hunt and they packed up early to see hundreds piling in from the road. As is with all good sportsmen they want to save the field for another day. The footage we were expecting apparently didn't turn out as well as they had hoped so we have no movies to show. Just a few more weeks to go until it all starts again. Can't WAIT!!! That's all for now, as always, keep checking back for the latest and greatest and thanks for all the hits. Send us your report!

Migratory Bird Season has Begun

Hello again all my technologically advanced and well connected waterfowl enthusiast friends. Welcome to Muck Bottom Outfitters Waterfowl Report. Waterfowl is a bit "loose" for todays report, but "migratory bird" oughta do it. The first day of dove season began yesterday. Along with 13 boxes of shells and one lamed robo-dove came a 5 man limited, 75 doves. Not real sure how the robo got "lit" up but the wings now have holes in them. The morning was pretty much a bust. All the moisture in the air and the dew on the plants kept most doves hunkered in the weeds for all the water they needed. Night-time, totally different story! Kaboom! Even though the wrecking crew was a few Muck Bottom boys short, they still manged to have a great day.

This weekend is opening weekend for all of you who manage to hunt south of Hwy 30. Sounds like the boys at the Hay Ditch will be out Saturday and fully expect to be done with their Honker limit by 9AM.

Waterfowl Wizard Wrote:
"Not So, looks like me, D-Master and others will be goin out in shorts and t-shirts on Saturday near the Hay Ditch. We expect to have 20 piled up by 0900 (early season alows 5 in the bag). I'll see if Sillo sock man will video tape."

We all expect to have report and footage when it's over so hopefully they'll pile 'em up and all of us unfortunate hunters North of Hwy 30 can salivate. That's all for now. Check back for the latest and greatest and as always, thanks for all the hits! Don't forget we're goin' global.
